Following the death of a child from biting of a crocodile in the historic Sufi Saint Khan Jahan Ali (RA) dighi, the Bagerhat district administration has decided to shift the only Madrasi crocodile to the Sundarbans.
The decision was taken at an urgently convened meeting held on Tuesday (June 2) night taking the safety of local and foreign visitors, devotees, and local people into account.
Held at the conference room of Bagerhat district administration, the special meeting was chaired by Deputy Commissioner (DC) Golam Mohammad Baten.
After the meeting, he told journalists that a decision was taken to shift the only crocodile of the dighi to Karamjal Wildlife Breeding Centre in Sundarbans temporarily to ensure the highest safety and security of the visitors coming at the shrine premises.
Besides, strict security and vigilance would be strengthened by police and the district administration around the shrine.
It may be mentioned that the body of a 7-year-old girl dragged away by a crocodile from the steps of the Hazrat Khan Jahan Ali (R) shrine dighi in Bagerhat, was recovered.from the north-eastern side of the dighi at around 4:45am on Tuesday (June 2, 2026) with the help of locals.
The dreadful incident happened when the girl got into the dighi for bathing at the women's ghat at around 8:30pm on Monday (June 1).
Hearing the appeal of the girl for saving her life, locals, visitors and khadems staying at the shrine rushed to the ghat. They themselves started rescue operation getting down into the dighi at their own initiatives.
The deceased, Fatema lived in the shrine area with her mentally challenged mother.
The Bagerhat Model Police Station later sent the body to a local hospital for autopsy.
