Muslim nations meet on Arab alternative to Trump Gaza plan

The Muslim world considered an Arab counter-plan to US President Donald Trump's widely condemned proposal to take over war-torn Gaza at an emergency meeting on Friday.

The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation's (OIC) secretary-general, Hissein Brahim Taha, gave his backing to the Arab plan at the opening of the talks in Jeddah.

Foreign ministers from the 57-member OIC have gathered after the Arab League endorsed Egypt's proposal to rebuild the Gaza Strip under the future administration of the Palestinian Authority.

At Tuesday's summit in Cairo, Arab leaders also announced a trust fund to pay for Gaza's reconstruction and urged the international community to back it.

The plan is a counter to Trump, who triggered global outrage by suggesting the US "take over" Gaza and turn it into the "Riviera of the Middle East", while forcing its Palestinian inhabitants to relocate to Egypt or Jordan.

The OIC's Taha "affirmed his support for the reconstruction plan for the Gaza Strip, which was adopted by the Arab Summit, while adhering to the right of the Palestinian people to remain in their land", a statement said.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty had said his country, a mediator in the Hamas-Israel ceasefire talks, wanted OIC support to make it "both an Arab plan and an Islamic plan."

"The meeting's main goal is to endorse the Arab plan," a Pakistani diplomat, who did not want to be named, told AFP.

"It's a crucial time and the Islamic world need to appear united as much as we could against the American plan."

However, the Arab proposal does not outline a role for Hamas, which controls Gaza, and was rejected by both the United States and Israel.

The plan "does not meet the expectations" of Washington, State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce told reporters on Thursday.

Trump's Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff gave a more positive reaction, calling it a "good-faith first step from the Egyptians."

Rabha Seif Allam, of the Al-Ahram Center for Political and Strategic Studies in Cairo, said "Egypt needs broad support" for its proposal.

"This is an attempt to build a broad coalition that refuses the displacement" of Palestinians from Gaza, she said.

Trump's plan has already united Arab countries in opposition, with Saudi Arabia also hosting Arab leaders two weeks ago to discuss alternatives.

The Jeddah meeting will "further signal the unity within the Islamic world", said Umar Karim, an expert on Saudi foreign policy at the University of Birmingham.

"Bigger Muslim countries like Indonesia, Turkey and Iran will be there and their endorsement will further (strengthen) the Arab plan," he said.

The OIC meeting will also consider readmitting Syria, suspended in 2012 early in the civil war under Bashar al-Assad, following the long-time ruler's toppling in December.

Explosion kills 34 at illegal fuel depot in Benin

At least 34 people, including two babies were killed when a contraband fuel depot exploded into flames in southern Benin near the border with Nigeria on Saturday.

According to Beninese Interior Minister Alassane Seidou, “a serious fire occurred in the town of Seme Podji. Another 20 people were seriously wounded in the incident.”

"I can't really give you the cause of the fire, but there is a large gasoline warehouse here and cars, tricycles and motorcycles come from morning to evening,” he added.

Nigeria is a main oil and gas producer where fuel smuggling is very common along its borders, particularly when the government maintains a subsidy to keep fuel prices low.

The majority of the victims were burnt and they could not be not be identified.

Why do we use it?

It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).
