A court in Khagrachhari has sentenced a 53-year-old tea-stall owner to death for rape of a seven-year-old child.
Judge Shaila Sharmin of the Khagrachhari Child Violence Suppression Tribunal delivered the verdict on Monday afternoon against the tea-stall owner Md. Shahin.
The court appointed public prosecutor (PP) Srijani Tripura confirmed about the judgement, saying that the accused was present at the court. He was then sent to jail.
According to court sources, the incident involving the rape of a Class II child studying at a local madrasa took place on July 25 last year at Ramgarh in Khagrachhari.
In a reaction to the judgement, state counsel Srijani Tripura expressed satisfaction with the verdict, saying, "We are satisfied with the verdict being delivered in the shortest possible time. Justice has been served through this judgment."
However, defense lawyer Bedarul Islam said they would appeal against the verdict at the higher court.
