Professor Abul Kashem Fazlul Haq, president of the Bangla Academy and former chairman of the Department of Bangla at the University of Dhaka, has passed away (Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi rajiun).
He breathed his last on Sunday afternoon (July 5) while undergoing treatment at Heart Foundation Hospital in the capital's Mirpur area. He was 85.
Razia Rahman Jolly, daughter-in-law of Professor Abul Kasem Fazlul Haq, confirmed the news of his death to Khaborer Kagoj.
Abul Kashem Fazlul Haq was born on 30 September 1940, in the village of Pakundia, Pakundia Upazila, Kishoreganj District.
During his career, he taught for many years in the Department of Bangla at the University of Dhaka.
He received the Bangla Academy Literary Award in 1981. On 27 October 2024, the interim government appointed him as the president of the Bangla Academy.
