Former State Minister for Home Affairs Tanjim Ahmad Sohel Taj has sharply criticised ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's announcement of returning to Bangladesh this year, labeling it as "another hypocrisy and deception."
He made the remarks in a post on his verified Facebook page on July 4, 2026.
Sohel Taj said: "Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her family are living proof of how a single individual's ego or pride can destroy an entire nation and a political party."
Regarding Sheikh Hasina's announcement to return to the country, he said: "After committing mass killings, enforced disappearances, murders, and resorting to rampant corruption, she fled the country due to the student-led mass uprising. Now, by speaking of returning while sitting on mountains of laundered money abroad, she is pushing innocent, grassroots Awami League activists into extreme danger once again."
According to Sohel Taj, it is absolutely impossible for the Awami League to return to Bangladesh's political arena in near future without proper self-criticism and self-realization.
Sohel Taj, son of Tajuddin Ahmad, the country's first prime minister, was first elected as a Member of Parliament from the Gazipur-4 (Kapasia) constituency under the Awami League nomination in the 2001 Jatiya Sangsad Election. In 2008, he won for the second time from the same constituency.
Sohel Taj was appointed as State Minister for Home Affairs in Sheikh Hasina's cabinet on January 6, 2009. However, citing personal reasons, he resigned from the cabinet on May 31 of the same year. On April 23, 2012, he also resigned from his position as a Member of Parliament. Although his resignation letter was not accepted at that time, he submitted it again on July 7 of the same year, and it was accepted.
