Veteran journalist and teacher Shahed Kamal (85), the eldest son of noted poet Sufia Kamal and former part-time teacher at Dhaka University's Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, has passed away.
He breathed his last at around 7:30pm on Saturday (July 4) at the ICU of Sikder Medical College Hospital at Dhanmondi in the capital.
His passing has cast a shadow of grief over the country's journalism and academic field.
Shahed Kamal's body was kept at his Dhanmondi Road 32 residence, 'Sanjher Maya', for the public to pay their final respects.
His namaj-e-janaza (funeral prayer) will be held after Zohr prayer today, Sunday (July 5), at Dhanmondi's Takwa Mosque.
Following the janaza, he will be laid to rest next to his mother, Poet Sufia Kamal, at the Azimpur Graveyard.
Shahed Kamal started his journalism career in 1957 with the Associated Press of Pakistan (APP). After independence, he served for a long time as a news editor at the state-run news agency, Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS).
He taught for over four decades as a part-time teacher at Dhaka University's Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, starting in 1976.
Unmarried in his personal life, he was actively involved with the Bangladesh Scouts movement. He also possessed deep knowledge in classical music, fine arts, literature, and social history, and was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award in Journalism in 2017.
