Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed leaves Dhaka for New York early Sunday to attend the fifth United Nations Chiefs of Police Summit (UNCOPS-V), scheduled to be held at the UN Headquarters on July 7-8.

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed left Dhaka for New York early Sunday to attend the fifth United Nations Chiefs of Police Summit (UNCOPS-V), scheduled to be held at the UN Headquarters on July 7-8.

During the visit, the minister will attend the inaugural session of the summit on July 8 at the UN General Assembly Hall and participate in a number of high-level plenary sessions.

This year's summit will feature three key plenary sessions titled 'The Future of United Nations Policing,' 'Innovation and New Technologies in UN Policing,' and 'Strengthening International Cooperation to Address Transnational Challenges.'

The home minister will also attend a high-level official dinner to be hosted on the sidelines of the summit.

During his stay in New York, Salahuddin Ahmed is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with UN Under-Secretary-General for Operational Support Atul Khare, Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix and Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs Rosemary A. DiCarlo.

He is also expected to hold separate bilateral meetings with home ministers and senior officials from several countries.

The meetings will focus on Bangladesh's contribution to UN peacekeeping operations, the participation and capacity-building of Bangladesh Police, deployment of specialised police units, future priorities of UN peace operations and other issues of mutual interest.

The two-day summit will be held on July 7-8.

The home minister will lead a five-member Bangladesh delegation, which includes Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Ali Hossain Fakir.

According to the schedule, he departed Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 1:40am on an Emirates flight and is expected to return to Dhaka on July 12.

Deal to ease trade in taka-rupee to be signed as Hasina

"An MoU will be signed between the National Payments Corporation of India and the Bangladesh Bank to make transactions in rupees and taka between Bangladesh and India easier," said the foreign minister in a press conference at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital on Thursday.

Besides, the neighbouring countries are likely to sign two more memorandums of understanding regarding cooperation in agricultural researches, and extension of the existing cultural exchange programme for two years, said the foreign minister.
