Five people, including two former leaders of the District Swechasebak Dal, have been sent to jail in connection with a sensational burglary at the residence of a judge couple at Amlapara area of Jamalpur town.
Police also recovered gold ornaments worth roughly Tk 19 lakh, a diamond ring, and cash.
Earlier, police pleaded to the court to place the arrested accused on seven-day remand to unearth the master plan and locate fleeing accomplices.
The arrested individuals were Jamalpur District Swecchasebal Dal's former Relief and Rehabilitation Affairs secretary Sumon Mia, 39, former assistant organising secretary Nazmul Ibne Hossain alias Biplob, 39, van driver Chan Mia alias Kalachan, 50, domestic help Nilufa, 32, and domestic help Hawa Begum, 30.
According to the case statement, Judge Ahmadul Kabir Shakil and Judge Nusrat Jerin Jenny have been living at a rented residence at Amlapara area in Jamalpur town over the last seven months. They have been employed as judges at Melandaha and Dewanganj civil judge courts respectively.
In the afternoon of June 30 last, judge Ahmadul Kabir Shakil accompanied his wife to Jamthol Ghat and then returned home at night. He found that the main gate of the residence closed from inside. Then he entered the residence breaking the doors with the help of neighbours and found that the miscreants entered the main bedroom cutting the window grills and took away cash Tk 1 lakh, gold ornaments, a diamond ring, and goods worth Tk 19 lakh 17 thousand and 983.
On the following day, AKM Sarwar Jahan Siddiqui, acting administrative officer of Jamalpur District and Sessions Judge Court, filed a case at Jamalpur Police Station."
At one stage of investigation, police arrested domestic help Nilufa of a nearby residence on Thursday night. Based on her information, police arrested judge's domestic help Hawa Begum. Then three more individuals were arrested at night according to the information provided by them.
Among the arrested persons--Nilufa hails from village Char Polisha under Melandaha upazila, Hawa Begum hails from village Titpolla Sardar Para under Sadar upazila, Chanmia from Amlapara in the town, Sumon Mia from Golapbagh area in municipal town, and Nazmul Ibne Hossain alias Biplob who hails from Collge Road area in town.
Jamalpur District Swecchasebak Dal member secretary Manzurul Karim Sumon said arrested Sumon and Bilob were leaders of District Swecchasebak Dal earlier. At present, they don't occupy any poistion of the party.
Jamalpur Police Station's OC (Investigtion) Noor Moh ammad said the arrested persons claimed their involvement in the burglary. They also said a seven-day remand was sought for four arrested persons to recover the stolen goods and identify the culprits.
Besides, domestic help Nilufa submitted confessional statement at court under Section 164.
