Ekushey Padak-winning poet Asad Chowdhury passes away at the age of 80 while undergoing treatment in Canada. His son-in-law Nadeem Iqbal confirmed the news.
He was in critical condition and had been admitted to a local hospital in Toronto, Canada.
The poet had been suffering from blood cancer since November, 2022 and he was admitted to the hospital several times recently.
He was born on February 11, 1943 in Ulania, Mehendiganj, Barisal.
His notable collections of poems include Tabak Deya Pan, Bitto Nai Besat Nai, Ekka Dokka, Joler Madhye Lekhajokha, Je Pare Paruk, Modhya Math Theke, Megher Julum Pakhir Julum, Nadio Bibastro Hoy, Premer Kabita, Batash Jemon Parichito, Brishtir Sansare Ami Keo Noi and others.
During the liberation war of Bangladesh, he was a contributor and broadcaster of Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra in Kolkata. He had also been assistant editor in "The Joybangla" (Kolkata) and in "The Daily Janapada" (Dhaka). He was a correspondent for The Daily Purbodesh from 1968 to 1971. He served as the director of Bangla Academy and he was a life member of the Asiatic Society of Bangladesh. After retirement, he worked as an editor at the Bengali service of Deutsche Welle.
