With the 12th parliamentary elections scheduled to be held in January, Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal discusses about elections issues with leading journalists and editors of the country.
"The EC will continue its sincere efforts to resolve any kind of crisis for participatory elections, but the EC will not impose their legal power on the political parties" said Kazi Habibul Awal, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) during an exchange of views on the "12th Jatiya Sangshad Elections: Role of Mass Media" on Thursday (26 October).
"As the organizer of the election, I would like to say again that the Election Commission anticipated a favourable environment in the nation for the approaching national elections, but this hasn't happened yet. We want to create a cordial and conducive atmosphere for voting. That's why we are constantly calling and we arranged dialogues. I have sent letters to those who are reticent to talk to us. But I didn't get any esponse," added CEC.
"Political parties have their own strategies. We won't interrupt," he added.
Organized by the Election Commission, the event was attended by the CEC, senior EC officials, other election commissioners, leading journalists and editors of newspapers, including Mostofa Kamal of The Khaborer Kagoj, Mahfuz Anam of The Daily Star and Naeem Nizam of Bangladesh Pratidin.
