Nobel laureate and Grameen Telecom chairman Dr Muhammad Yunus on Monday insists he is innocent and has been punished unjustly in the labour law violation case.
“I was punished for the crime that I didn’t commit. This grief remains in my heart,” he said.
Dr Yunus told this to the journalists on Monday hours after the third labour court in Dhaka sentenced him to six months in prison and fined Tk 25,000 for labour law violation.
He said someone might see the verdict as justice. “It is my fate, the nation’s fate. We accepted it as a crime and now our lawyers will see a way out of it,” he said.
Yunus said he came to court with high expectations on the first day of the new year. “Many of my friends came here whom I haven’t met in years. All of us came to hear the court’s verdict… I received a shock on a joyous day,” he said.
After the court delivered the verdict, Dr Yunus’ counsel Abdullah Al Mamun termed the verdict unprecedented.
He told journalists that this verdict of the labour court is incomplete and Dr Yunus did not get justice from the court.
His client will appeal against this verdict to the top court within the stipulated time, Abdullah Al Mamun added.
