Election Commission (EC) Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed on Sunday said that the Election Commission (EC) will decide on Jamaat-e-Islami's registration, election symbol and Ishraq Hossain's mayoral post after receiving a copy of the relevant verdict of the Supreme Court's Appellate Division.
"We haven't received any observation from the court regarding Jamaat's registration and symbol. We will take legal steps after getting observations from the court," he said while talking to journalists at the Election Office at Agargaon here today.
Replying to a query on Jamaat's registration and symbol, he said, "Jamaat will be provided with what they deserve legally. As I have no document of court's observation in this regard, I have no scope to make any remark on this."
Regarding another query on BNP leader Ishrak Hossen's mayorship, he said, "I cannot make any official statement without getting any document or paper."
Earlier this morning, the Supreme Court overturned a High Court verdict declaring Jamaat's registration illegal and instructed the EC to address the issue of the party's symbol.
Meanwhile, on May 30, the Supreme Court's Appellate Division resolved the leave to appeal concerning the gazette notification declaring BNP leader Ishrak Hossen as Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) mayor, with observations.
