Detective Branch (DB) of police today apprehended former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal from the capital's Moghbazar area.

His arrest came two days after the detention of another former CEC, KM Nurul Huda, in a case filed against them and 22 others for alleged manipulation of national elections.

According to deputy commissioner of DB (Media and Public Relations) Muhammad Talebur Rahman, Kazi Habibul Awal was arrested around 2pm today. He was taken to the DB office on Minto Road.

Nurul Huda and Habibul Awal were CECs during the parliamentary election in 2018 and 2024 respectively.

Earlier, a Dhaka court granted a four-day remand for Nurul Huda in the case on June 23, a day after his arrest from his Uttara residence in the evening of June 22.

BNP national executive committee member Md Salah Uddin Khan filed the case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station on Sunday against 24 individuals, including ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and three former CECs, for manipulating the national elections in 2014, 2018 and 2024.

Former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, four former Inspectors General of Police (IGP), several former Election Commissioners and former chiefs of Special Branch (SB), National Security Intelligence (NSI) and Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) were accused in the case.

"An MoU will be signed between the National Payments Corporation of India and the Bangladesh Bank to make transactions in rupees and taka between Bangladesh and India easier," said the foreign minister in a press conference at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital on Thursday.

Besides, the neighbouring countries are likely to sign two more memorandums of understanding regarding cooperation in agricultural researches, and extension of the existing cultural exchange programme for two years, said the foreign minister.
