A Japan expatriate couple has been the victims of an organised dacoity at Sonargaon in Narayanganj district.
The victims alleged that the dacoits looted 15 bhories of gold ornaments and other valuables from their possession.
The dacoity had happened at about 8:30pm on Wednesday (July 8) at a place near Meghna Toll Plaza on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway.
It is learnt that a gang of five to six armed dacoits intercepted their car, assaulted them, and looted their belongings.
Police said Japan expatriate Arman, 40, son of Abdus Sobhan of Feni district, was coming to Dhaka from Feni with his wife, children and other family members boarding a microbus (Hiace) in order to leave the country for Japan. When they arrived at a place near Meghna Toll Plaza under Pirojpur union on the highway, an organised gang of five to six dacoits waylaid their microbus brandishing local weapons, knives and iron rods. As the microbus stopped, the dacoits physcially assaulted Arman and his family members, and forcibly took away 15 bhories of gold ornaments woth Tk 30 lakh, 3 mobile phones including a iPhone 16 Pro Max, and cash Tk 30,000 from their possession.
Another motorcycle rider who had witnessed the incident said he also did not approach ahead witnessing five to six people standing on the highway with chapatis in their hands.
Contacted, Kanchpur Highway Police Station's officer-in-charge (OC) Md Shamim Sheikh said the place of occurence falls under the jurisdiction of Meghna Toll Plaza and the dacoity didn't happen on the highway. It happened on a road near the highway.
Sonargaon Police Station's OC Golam Sarwar said: "I have been working with the incident of dacoity. I'm yet to know everything in details."
Asked that the incident had happened in front of a police checkpost, he said, "I have heard it, but can't tell you anything else in this regard."
