MPO-listed teachers have announced an indefinite nationwide strike beginning from Monday (October 13), demanding increased house rent and other allowances.
Delawar Hossain Azizi, secretary of the MPO Education Nationalisation Alliance, made the announcement after law enforcement agencies used force to disperse a sit-in protest near the National Press Club earlier on Sunday
He said there has been a despicable attack on teachers in front of the National Press Club. In protest, a full-day strike will be observed in all MPO-affiliated educational institutions in the country starting Monday.
He said, “We will not return to classrooms until the government issues notifications for a 20 percent house rent increase, Tk 1,500 medical allowance, and 75 percent festival bonus.
“We condemn today’s police attack. Several of our colleagues were arrested, and we demand their unconditional release immediately,” he added.
Earlier, on Sunday, around 1:45 pm, when teachers protested in the capital's National Press Club area demanding 20 percent house rent and other allowances, police used sound grenades, water cannons and batons to disperse them.
