Shapla Chattar killings: Tribunal asks police to produce Dipu, Babu, Rupa

The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has ordered former minister Dipu Moni, journalists Farzana Rupa and Mozammel Babu to appear before it on May 14 in a case filed over crimes against humanity committed during the Hefazat-e-Islam grand rally at Shapla Chattar in Motijheel.

A two-member bench of ICT-1 led by Justice Md Shafiul Alam Mahmud on Thursday (May 7) passed the order. Other member of the bench is judge Md Mohitul Enam Chowdhury.

Prosecution pleaded to the tribunal to issue production warrants against former minister Dr Dipu Moni, journalists Mozammel Babu and Farzana Rupa.

Tribunal's prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim confirmed the media about it. 

He said Dipu Moni was the foreign minister when massacre was carried out at Shapla Chattar on May 5, 2013. At that time, she (Dipu Moni) publicised internationally that the members of the law enforcing agencies had eliminated a group of unruly people.

Besides, it was stated at the tribunal that journalists Farzana Rupa and Mozammel Babu broadcast the Hefazat-e-Islam grand rally programmes as provocative speeches through Ekattor Television."

Following the hearing, the tribunal asked police to produced them before it. At the same time, the tribunal set May 14 for the next hearing.

The case is now under investigation. The tribunal fixed June 7 next to submit investigation report before it.

Six accused in the case are currently in jail. They are former state minister for home affairs Shamsul Haque Tuku, Maj Gen (Retd) Ziaul Ahsan, former inspector general of police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Hoque, former deputy inspector general (DIG) of police Molla Nazrul Islam, president of the advisory council of Ekattorer Ghatak-Dalal Nirmul Committee Shahriar Kabir, and former DIG Abdul Jalil Mondal.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina arrived in Washington DC, the USA capital city, this afternoon after joining the 78th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session and other high-level side and bilateral events in New York.

 

She reached Washington DC from New York by road at 6pm.

On her arrival in Washington DC, Bangladesh Ambassador to the USA Muhammad Imran received the premier with a flower bouquet, reports BSS.

Earlier, she left her Place of Residence, Lotte New York for Washington DC at 12:30pm.

She arrived in New York on September 17.

The prime minister will leave Washington DC for London, the capital city of the United Kingdom, on September 29.

She will stay in London till October 3.

After wrapping up her visit, the prime minister will leave London for home and scheduled to reach Dhaka on October 4.

"An MoU will be signed between the National Payments Corporation of India and the Bangladesh Bank to make transactions in rupees and taka between Bangladesh and India easier," said the foreign minister in a press conference at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital on Thursday.
