The Appeallate Division of the Supreme Court has upheld the bail of former chairman of Janata Bank Limited Dr Abul Barakat in a case filed over the allegations of embezzling Tk 297 crore.
The Appeallate Division led by Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury rejected a petition of the deputy commissioner of Dhaka against the High Court order granting bail to Dr Barakat.
Senior lawyer Mustafizur Rahman Khan appeared in favour of the petition.
On February 20 last year, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed a case against 23 people in Dr Barakat for their alleged involvement in embezzling Tk 297 crore through AnonTex Group. Abul Barakat was arrested at night on July 11, 2025 in the case.
In its case, the ACC has claimed that former Bangladesh Bank governor Atiur Rahman and former Janata Bank Limited chairman Abul Barakat, in connivance with each other, provided loans amounting to Tk 297 crore to 22 fake companies of AnonTex Group through forgery.
Atiur Rahman and his associates embezzled the money through various unethical means, the ACC also mentioned in the case.
Being failed at the lower court, Abul Barakat subsequently submitted his bail prayer to the High Court. After the High Court granted him bail, the Dhaka's deputy commissioner filed an appeal against the bail which was rejected on Wednesday (May 21).
Dr Abul Barakat was chairman of the Department of Economics of Dhaka University and president of Bangladesh Economic Association.
