15 killed as iron rod-laden truck overturns in Tangail
Fifteen people have been killed and 10 others injured when a rod-laden truck turned turtle on the Dhaka-Tangail highway at about 4:30am today (Monday, May 25) at Soratoil area on the eastern side of Jamuna Bridge.


Fifteen people have been killed and 10 others injured when an iron rod-laden truck overturned on the Dhaka-Tangail highway under Kalihati upazila in Tangail district.

The accident happened at about 4:30am today (Monday, May 25) at Soratoil area on the eastern side of Jamuna Bridge.

Condition of six of the injured was stated be critical.

Elenga Fire Station in-charge Ataur Rahman confirmed about the accident. 

He said an iron rod-laden truck from Dhaka was heading toward North Bengal with extra passengers on board. When the truck reached at Soratoil Dakshinpara under Kalihati upazila at about 5:00am, it overturned and plunged into a roadside ditch, leaving 15 people dead on the spot and 10 others injured. Six seriously injured passengers were admitted to Tangail General Hospital.

Ataur Rahman further said all the deceased passengers were going to North Bengal sitting on the rod-laden truck.

Meanwhile, the local administration has identifies 13, out of the deceased 15. All of them hail from Rajendrabati and Chiklabola villages in Varsho union under  Manda upazila in Naogaon district. They were rice harvesting day-labourers by profession. Manda Upazila Nirbahi Officer Akter Jahan Sathi confirmed it.

Police and Fire Service are now trying to identify the names and addresses of rest of the deceased.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina arrived in Washington DC, the USA capital city, this afternoon after joining the 78th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session and other high-level side and bilateral events in New York.

 

She reached Washington DC from New York by road at 6pm.

On her arrival in Washington DC, Bangladesh Ambassador to the USA Muhammad Imran received the premier with a flower bouquet, reports BSS.

Earlier, she left her Place of Residence, Lotte New York for Washington DC at 12:30pm.

She arrived in New York on September 17.

The prime minister will leave Washington DC for London, the capital city of the United Kingdom, on September 29.

She will stay in London till October 3.

After wrapping up her visit, the prime minister will leave London for home and scheduled to reach Dhaka on October 4.

"An MoU will be signed between the National Payments Corporation of India and the Bangladesh Bank to make transactions in rupees and taka between Bangladesh and India easier," said the foreign minister in a press conference at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital on Thursday.
