Prime Minister Tarique Rahman hands over sports cards to 129 athletes and honoured athletes who achieved success at the international level at the Shapla Hall of the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) in the city's Tejgaon today (Monday).

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman today (Monday) inaugurated the sports allowance and sports card programmes for national athletes at the Shapla Hall of the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) in the city's Tejgaon.

The premier launched the monthly allowance programme around on Monday morning by pressing a button on a laptop when an amount of Tk 1,00,000 was instantly transferred to each athlete's accounts through Sonali Bank's online system.

The government introduced the programme under a pay structure for national athletes with the theme 'Krira Hole Pesha, Paribar Pabe Bharosha (When sports become a profession, families gain security)'.

On the occasion, the Prime Minister handed over sports cards to 129 athletes and honoured athletes who achieved success at the international level.

LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir spoke at the function as the guest of honor with State Minister for Sports and Youth Md Aminul Haque in the chair.

Sports and Youth Secretary Md Mahbub-Ul-Alam delivered the welcome address.

Aminul Haque in his speech said 129 athletes got the allowance today while a total of 500 sportspersons will be brought under the programme within the next seven days.

Athletes from 20 disciplines, including the SAFF Futsal-winning women's team, kabaddi, and volleyball, were brought under this programme.

The programme marks the beginning of a new era in the country's sports sector. Under the government's election manifesto, athletes from various disciplines will now come under a salary structure. However, cricketers will remain outside this system as the cricket board is self-reliant.

On the occasion, a documentary was screened highlighting the contributions of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, and Arafat Rahman Koko in the country's sports sector.

The documentary also presented various plans of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman for improving athletes' living standards, creating new playgrounds, and developing talented players from the grassroots.

In the background of the documentary, the song "Prothom Bangladesh Amar, Shesh Bangladesh" was played.

Women and Children Affairs and Social Welfare Minister Abu Zafar Md. Zahid Hossain, Liberation War Affairs Minister Ahmed Azam Khan, Land Minister Md Mizanur Rahman Minu, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam, Prime Minister's Adviser Md Ismail Zabiullah, Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator Abdus Salam and BNP Vice Chairman Dr Asaduzzaman Ripon were present on the occasion, among others.

Neymar quits PSG to sign for Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal

Neymar said he was relishing “new challenges and opportunities in new places” after he joined Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal from Paris Saint-Germain on a two-year deal Tuesday, becoming the latest big name lured to the oil-rich Gulf state.

The Brazil forward, 31, ends a six-year stay in the French capital and follows in the footsteps of Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Sadio Mane in swapping Europe for the Middle East.

“I have achieved a lot in Europe and enjoyed special times, but I have always wanted to be a global player and test myself with new challenges and opportunities in new places,” Neymar said in a statement from the Saudi Pro League.

“I want to write new sporting history, and the Saudi Pro League has tremendous energy and quality players at the moment,” he added.

Neymar was “in negotiations” on Sunday to become the latest football superstar to decamp for Saudi Arabia, leaving Paris Saint-Germain just as Kylian Mbappe was brought back in from the cold by the French champions.

A source close to PSG told AFP that 31-year-old Neymar “no longer figures in the club or manager’s plans” with the Brazilian immediately linked to Al-Hilal in the Gulf kingdom.

Another source in Saudi Arabia said that “direct negotiations” between Neymar’s agents and the Public Investment Fund (PIF) were ongoing.

PSG get better of Dortmund in Champions League opener

Paris Saint-Germain got their Champions League campaign off to a winning start on Tuesday as a Kylian Mbappe penalty set them up for a 2-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund at the Parc des Princes.

The French champions had dominated the first half without overly troubling the Dortmund defence, but they went ahead four minutes after the break when Mbappe scored a spot-kick awarded for a Niklas Suele handball.

Achraf Hakimi added a memorable second, and PSG could have won the Group F encounter by a far more handsome margin in the end.

The result immediately puts them in control of the group, after AC Milan and Newcastle United drew 0-0 earlier, and coach Luis Enrique will hope they can build on this performance when they visit the English side next in a fortnight.

"It was an almost perfect evening," said Luis Enrique.
