Chattogram city goes under water due to heavy rainfall

A total of 330.8 millimeters of rainfall was recorded in Chattogram city over the last 24 hours up to 9:00am on Tuesday (July 7), according to the Patenga Meteorological Office.

The torrential rain has triggered severe waterlogging across various areas of the port city, with water levels reaching from ankle-deep to knee-deep. Consequently, office-goers and students faced immense suffering. Due to the adverse weather and waterlogging, classes and examinations at various educational institutions have been suspended.

Meanwhile, due to the torrential rain, water ranging from knee-deep to waist-deep has been accumulated in different parts of the city, including Chawkbazar, Katalganj, Sholakbahar, Rahmatganj, Kapasgola, Faridar Para, GEC, Agrabad, Muradpur, Kushumbag, and Sonali Residential, Bashundhara Residential, Rampur, and Anandipur in the K, L, and O blocks of Halishahar. Residents have faced great distress as water entered the ground floors of many houses and shops.

Asgar Hossain, a serviceholder, said, "My office is at Agrabad area. Knee-deep water has accumulated there since morning. It is difficult to enter the office because of the water."

Jannatul Ferdous Esha, a student, said, "Our house is in Kushumbag residential area of Khulshi. Water has entered there. There is no way to get out of the house."

Biswajit Chowdhury, Assistant Meteorologist of the Patenga Meteorological Office, said that heavy rainfall is likely to continue until Friday next. This brings a high risk of waterlogging as well as potential landslides.

Meanwhile, ongoing classes and examinations at various educational institutions in the port city, including those managed by the City Corporation, have been postponed due to constant rain and inclement weather conditions.

Dr Kissinger Chakma, Chief Education Officer of the Chattogram City Corporation, told reporters that Tuesday's examinations were postponed in accordance with the proposal of the examination committee. Examinations at other educational institutions in the city were also postponed. These examinations will be held at a later date.
