The United Nations has said it has no plans to send observers to Bangladesh for the upcoming 13th parliamentary elections scheduled on 12 February.
The UN does not deploy election observers unless there is a mandate from either the UN General Assembly or the Security Council, said the Secretary-General’s spokesman, Stéphane Dujarric, at a briefing in New York on Tuesday.
“However, the UN country office often provides technical assistance in elections,” he said, adding that he would check whether the UN’s country office in Bangladesh was providing any technical assistance, which he said was more common.
