Five members of a family, including three children, multiple burn injuries in a fire broke that broke out from a gas leakage at a house at Uttar Bhuigarh Giridhara area in Fatullah of Narayanganj on Sunday morning.
The injured are vegetable vendor Md Abul Kalam, 47, who sustained 95 per cent burns; his wife Saima Begum, 35, with 60 per cent burns; son Munna, 12, with 30 per cent burns; and daughters Munni, 7, with 35 per cent burns and Kotha, 8, with 52 per cent burns. The incident occurred around 7:00am when a sudden fire erupted in the kitchen of a flat on the ground floor in an eight-storeyed building while the burner was being lit, police and local sources said.
Neighbours rescued the victims and rushed them to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery (NIBPS) around 7:45am.
According to neighbours, the family lived on the ground floor of a nine-storey building in Fatullah.
Preliminary suspicion suggests that accumulated gas from a leakage triggered the blaze.
NIBPS resident surgeon Dr Shawon Bin Rahman said all five victims sustained 30 to 95 percent burns and are in critical condition.
