Commerce, Industry, and Textiles and Jute Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir on Friday said there is no such thing as failure in scientific research, as every stage of research generates new knowledge and experience that contributes to future innovation.

He made the remarks while inaugurating the 47th National Science and Technology Week and Science Fair at the Mohammad Ali Gymnasium of Sylhet District Stadium.

The minister urged teachers, parents and all concerned to encourage students to engage more actively in scientific studies and research.

“A country’s progress depends largely on a knowledge-based society and research,” he said, adding that innovation and scientific inquiry are essential for achieving national development.

Referring to university-based research in the United States, he said countries can reach greater heights through sustained investment in science and innovation.

Muktadir praised the students participating in the fair for their creativity, courage and innovative thinking.

He said solutions to many of the country’s problems must come from domestic research and innovation.

Citing the development of oral saline to prevent diarrhoea and local technologies for preserving onions and potatoes, he said these innovations emerged from practical national needs and demonstrated the successful application of research.

The minister expressed hope that continued science education and regular science fairs at schools, colleges and universities would inspire more innovative ideas among young people.

The programme was chaired by Sylhet Divisional Commissioner Md Mashiur Rahman.

Among others, former lawmaker MA Malik, Shahjalal University of Science and Technology Vice-Chancellor Dr SM Sarwar Uddin Chowdhury, Sylhet Agricultural University Vice-Chancellor Dr Md Alimul Islam, Sylhet City Corporation Administrator Abdul Qaiyum Chowdhury and senior civil and police officials addressed the event.

After the inauguration, the minister distributed prizes among winners of various categories of the Notun Kuri Sports competition at the district level.
