Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury has said that the 9th National Pay Scale will be implemented from July 1 next.
Speaking to a mass medium at his office at the secretariat in the capital on Monday (May 18), he said, "The new salary structure will be implemented at the beginning of the next fiscal, meaning from July 1. Work is underway to determine the best possible way to implement it."
According to sources at the Finance Ministry, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has aleady given directives to implement the new pay scale for government employees. Allocation for the new pay scale will be given to the next fiscal year's budget. However, all the recommendations of the Pay Commission will not be implemented this time.
The department concerned of the government has hinted that according to the recommendations of the Cabinet Division led by Nasimul Gani, the new pay scale will be implemented in the next three fiscals.
In this regard, the Finance Minister said the committee recommended it. "But, we have limitations in the budget. We are in a very tough situation."
He said, "The condition of the economy is not good. Revenue collection is also not satisfactory. So, we have to exclude many things. We have to curtail many things. In spite of it, the salary structure is being looked into positively."
In the first phase (FY 2026–27), it is learnt that 50 percent of the increased basic salary under the new structure will be introduced. The second phase (FY 2027–28) will implement the remaining 50 percent of the revised basic salary. In the final phase, various allowances and other financial benefits will be fully adjusted and integrated into the salary structure.
One of the key features of the proposed structure is that the existing 20-grade system will remain unchanged. The proposal recommends raising the minimum basic salary from Tk 8,250 to Tk 20,000 and the maximum from Tk 78,000 to Tk 1,60,000. Overall, salaries of government officials and employees are expected to increase by approximately 100 to 140 percent.
