The government has ordered that all shopping malls, markets, and shops across the country must close by 7 pm as part of efforts to ensure efficient electricity use and maintain a stable power supply during the ongoing summer season.
In an official letter issued on Monday, the Power Division said the directive follows earlier government instructions aimed at reducing electricity consumption during peak demand hours.
According to the order, all markets and shopping centres must remain closed after 7:00 pm, while decorative and advertising lighting is to be switched off by 8:00 pm.
The authorities have also requested organisers of social, cultural and community events to avoid using illumination and decorative lighting after 7:00 pm.
The directive comes as electricity demand continues to rise due to high temperatures across the country.
The Power Division noted that the government had previously instructed offices, courts, educational institutions and industrial establishments to conserve energy through various measures.
The latest decision extends those efforts to commercial establishments and public
events.
Officials have been asked to take necessary steps to implement the order and ensure compliance at the local level.
The letter, signed by a senior official of the Power Division, was sent to divisional commissioners, deputy commissioners and other relevant authorities for immediate action.
