Former Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad and BNP Standing Committee member Barrister Muhammad Jamiruddin Sircar passed away at 4:19am today (Sunday).
He breathed his last while undergoing treatment at Bangladesh Specialized Hospital at Shyamoli in the capital due to old age and various physical illnesses.
The veteran politician and lawyer was 95 years old at the time of his passing.
His first namaj-e-janaza (funeral prayer) will be held after Zohr prayer at Takwa Mosque in Dhanmondi instead of the Supreme Court premises, while his second janaza will take place at 5:00pm at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad.
He will be buried at the designated plot of the Parliament building area.
Meanwhile, Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury expressed deep grief and prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul of Barrister Jamiruddin Sircar.
In honor of Barrister Jamiruddin Sircar, the second half (half-day) proceedings of both the Appellate and High Court Divisions of the Supreme Court, as well as the Chamber Court, will remain closed today.
Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed also expressed deep condolences on the death of this veteran parliamentarian.
Barrister Jamiruddin Sircar was born on December 1, 1931, at Noyabari village under Tetulia upazila in Panchagarh district.
He obtained degrees in History and Law from Dhaka University, and later earned his 'Barrister-at-Law' from Lincoln's Inn in the United Kingdom.
He served as the Speaker of the Eighth Jatiya Sangsad from October 28, 2001, to January 25, 2009.
He also served as the Acting President of Bangladesh.
