Ending the tension over the main opposition party in parliament, Ghulam Muhammad Quader, chairman of the Jatiya Party, has been made leader of the opposition in parliament while Anisul Islam Mahmud as deputy leader of the opposition.

The parliament secretariat issued a gazette notification in this regard on Sunday.

Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury recognised GM Quader as opposition leader and Anisul Islam Mahmud as the deputy opposition leader in parliament, according to the gazette.

Earlier this day, Jatiya Party Chief Patron Raushan Ershad declared herself as the chairman of the party, relieving the current party chief and secretary general from their posts.

She also appointed Jatiya Party presidium member Kazi Mamunur Rashid as the secretary general of the party.

However, Chunnu at a press conference said they are least bothered about the baseless move taken by Raushon as she has no authority to make such decisions.

On January 18 the Jatiya Party has nominated its chairman, GM Quader, as the leader of the opposition. The party's Co-Chairman Anisul Islam Mahmud has been nominated as the deputy leader of the opposition party and General Secretary Md Mujibul Haque as the opposition chief whip. It was decided to inform Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury about the nominations in writing.

In the January 7 election, the candidates of the ruling Awami League won 223 seats and formed a government for a fourth consecutive term with an absolute majority.

Independent candidates won the second-highest number of seats. They were declared winners in 62 constituencies. Of the winners, 59 hold positions in the Awami League despite running without the party's backing. The Jatiya Party won 11 seats.

Like the two previous elections, the Jatiya Party won the second-highest number of seats as a party. That is why they are claiming to be the parliamentary opposition in the 12th parliament.
